"When we strive to pass wilderness legislation, what we are really engaged in is democracy at work."
- Bart Koehler

Read an important message about patriotism and the purpose of wilderness from our friends at the Wilderness Support Center in Colorado.

A Milestone in Albuquerque : Brian Anderson

With the help of environmental organizations, the National Park Service and Forest Service, I was able to attend this historic event, along with a small contingent of environmental leaders in the millennial generation. It was both a celebration, and a time to discuss the relevancy of this monumental environmental legislation. I was incredibly overwhelmed with the opportunity to hear people like Dave Foreman and Terry Tempest Williams speak in person. It turned out to be all that I imagined it would be, incredible.

For me this was an opportunity to meet the legends of the past, and in meeting these people I was able to hopefully come away a little wiser. How many impassioned young environmentalists get to ask Dave Foreman about direct action and its relevancy today? I was also able to contribute to Mathieu Brown’s presentation regarding his Prescott College course honoring the 50th anniversary of this legislation. Terry Tempest Williams said that the time had come to “lay our bodies down” and create a public lands revolution, speaking of the urgency of this time in human history. Coming out of this conference, I feel more inspired and ready to take part in the Wilderness movement. I believe it is still relevant, if not more relevant today than it ever has been.
