“There was no way to get the materials and tools into the Wilderness location other than horseback,” said BLM Kingman Wilderness Coordinator Bruce Asbjorn.

“The work simply would not have been done had it not been for the Arizona Wilderness Coalition and the Back Country Horsemen of Arizona volunteers.”

This multi-day, overnight AWC-BCHAZ project was critical for the well-being of native wildlife within the Warm Springs Wilderness, such as bighorn sheep. Participants had numerous chances to see wildlife, glimpse some spectacular pre-historic sites and petroglyphs, experience the unique ecological mix of the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts, and enjoy the beautiful weather this time of year.

The trip was planned as a rugged backcountry service project, guided by AWC and with assistance from the Backcountry Horsemen of Arizona. AWC volunteers helped repair fencing around the three warm springs for which the wilderness is named; Backcountry Horsemen helped haul in the new fencing and carry out the old fencing with their horse team.

This was a long-overdue project: wild burros have done significant damage to existing fencing and are keeping native wildlife from accessing critical water supplies the springs provide. AWC was able to help BLM repair 3 of the 4 springs on this trip.
